How to Clean a Driveway Without a Pressure Washer

Pressure washers are the fastest way to clean a driveway, but they're not the only way. Plenty of London homeowners get great results with a bucket, a brush and the right chemistry — especially on smaller driveways or when you're worried about blasting joint sand out of block paving.

What you'll need

• Stiff-bristle outdoor broom (never wire — it stains paving).
• 10–15 litre bucket and a watering can with a rose head.
• Driveway cleaner or biological washing powder.
• Moss/algae killer (benzalkonium chloride based) for shaded areas.
• Garden hose with a trigger nozzle.

Step 1: Dry sweep first

Sweep the entire drive to lift loose grit, leaves and dry moss. Skipping this step just turns everything into a muddy paste when the water hits.

Step 2: Kill weeds and algae

Apply a moss/algae killer at least 24 hours before washing. This is what stops regrowth — a rinse alone won't do it.

Step 3: Mix a hot cleaning solution

Half a cup of biological washing powder dissolved in 10 litres of hot water is cheap and highly effective on general grime and light oil. For heavier staining, use a dedicated patio cleaner at the label dilution.

Step 4: Scrub in sections

Pour the solution over a 2–3 m² section, leave for 5–10 minutes (do not let it dry), then scrub in circular motions with the stiff broom. Work top to bottom so dirty water runs off cleaned areas.

Step 5: Rinse with a hose

A trigger nozzle on jet mode gives roughly 5–7 bar — enough to flush the surface without lifting joint sand. Rinse thoroughly; leftover cleaner attracts dirt.

When you really do need a pressure washer

Deeply ingrained black spots (lichen) and old oil stains almost never come off by hand. If the drive still looks tired after a full manual clean, it's time to book a hot-water pressure wash.
