How to Clean a Resin Driveway Without Damaging It

Resin-bound driveways need gentler care than block paving. Here's how to clean, de-moss and maintain a resin driveway in London safely.
Resin-bound driveways look fantastic when new and require less maintenance than block paving — but they can be ruined by the wrong cleaning method. Aggressive pressure washing, wire brushes or acidic cleaners all cause permanent damage.
Routine cleaning (every 1–2 months)
Sweep with a stiff (not wire) brush and rinse with a garden hose. That's usually enough to keep resin looking new.
Deep clean (once or twice a year)
- Remove leaves and debris first.
- Apply a pH-neutral driveway cleaner diluted per the label.
- Leave for 10–15 minutes — do not let it dry out.
- Rinse with a pressure washer set to 100 bar or less, held at least 30 cm from the surface, at a shallow angle.
Moss and algae
London's damp climate encourages algae on any shaded resin driveway. Use a dedicated moss/algae killer (benzalkonium chloride based) — it's safe for resin and lasts 6–12 months. Avoid bleach, which discolours pale stone.
What to avoid
- Rotary surface cleaners at high pressure — they can strip resin.
- Hydrochloric or sulphuric acid cleaners — dissolve the binder.
- Sharp tools for removing weeds — puncture the resin.
When to call a specialist
If patches are lifting, going bald or showing white "bloom" (a chalky residue after rain), the resin needs professional attention — usually a UV re-coat rather than replacement.
