How to Clean a Block Paving Driveway (London Homes)

Block paving covers more London driveways than any other material. It looks great for decades if maintained — and awful within two years if it isn't. Here's the full routine most professional cleaners follow.

Step 1: Kill the weeds and moss first

Apply a systemic weed killer (glyphosate or acetic-acid based) 5–7 days before cleaning. Killing the roots first stops regrowth within weeks.

Step 2: Sweep out loose material

Use a stiff broom to lift dry moss and joint debris. This is boring but doubles the effectiveness of the wash.

Step 3: Pressure wash

Use a rotary surface cleaner (£40 attachment for domestic washers) rather than a lance — it cleans evenly and doesn't blast joint sand out as aggressively. Work in overlapping strips at walking pace.

Step 4: Re-sand the joints

This is the step DIY jobs almost always skip — and it's why cleaned driveways weed up again fast. Brush kiln-dried sand into the joints while the surface is dry, then vibrate in with a plate compactor (hireable for £40/day) or firm foot pressure.

Step 5: Seal (optional)

A block paving sealer (£15–£30 per 5L) locks in the sand, blocks weeds and repels oil. Expect it to last 2–3 years. Only seal when the paving is bone dry — at least 48 hours without rain.

How often?

A full clean + re-sand every 12–18 months keeps most London driveways in showroom condition. Shaded, north-facing driveways may need it yearly.
